ABC's of the Word

hosts an ABC's of the Word on Thursdays so I thought I would give it a try. Today is "A"!

A - Able! Able is a seemingly innocent word on the surface. But, if you dig into it you will find that it means having sufficient power, skill, resources to accomplish an object; susceptible to action or treatement; marked by intelligence, knowledge, skill or competence (Merriam Webster Dictionary). Able is a word you can take comfort from or gather strength from. Doesn't everyone want to be able to do or accomplish something? When you put this tiny four letter word into a verse of Scripture it takes on a significance from a higher power.

2 Corinthians 9:8 (NIV) - "And, God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work." The word able in this context is the Greek word "dunatos" which means able, powerful, might, strong, mighty in wealth and influence, strong in soul (to bear calamities and trials with fortitude and patience; strong in Christian virtue); to be able to do something; mighty, excelling in something; having power for something." The root word for "dunatos" is "dunamai".

"Dunamai" is the Greek word meaning to be able, have power whether by virtue of one's own ability and resources, or of a state of mind, or through favorable circumstances, or by permission of law or custom; to be able to do something; to be capable, strong and powerful. This is the word "able" that is found in the following two Scriptures:

Ephesians 3:20 (NIV) - "Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us..."

Ephesians 6:13 (NIV) - "Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

Lastly, in Ephesians 6:16 (KJV) - "Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked." This "able" is from the Greek word "dunamis" which denotes "explosive power or dynamic power" and is where we get the word "dynamite".

When we are in Christ, we have access to His supernatural, dynamic power in our lives. He enables us here on earth to accomplish His will. I want to be able. Whatever the task may be...I want to have explosive power, His explosive power and ability, to be mighty in influence. I am able because God is Able!

As I read "able" something stirred in me...it hit me that it is indeed a comforting powerful word.

AWESOME! Blessings and I'm so glad that you joined because this really stirred ALOT in me...from the word ABLE...to be able...Beautiful study & scriptures! Thanks for your insights! As I was reading I thought about the word in Spanish "to be able to" and it's "poder", but it also means "POWER"...now that is so amazing to me in putting it together with ALL you've shared!

"Able" seems like a strong word -- Strength. Might. Power. And those are traits given by God. Wow!

I do love your painting of Christ and the lamb. Boy, doesn't that bring lots of Scripture verses to mind!

But, GOD is ABLE--He is STRONG, POWERFUL, MIGHTY, and through HIM He gives us this POWER, MIGHT and STRENGTH.
