Tracks
I was awakened very early this morning so I took the opportunity to drive the 2 1/2 miles to the beach. I have to admit that I haven't actually set foot on the sand since Hurricane Katrina. For many months no one was allowed South of the CSX tracks unless they had property there, so that excluded us from viewing the destruction first hand. When the general public was permitted to once again travel Highway 90 it was really too painful to view! Where once stately homes stood were empty lots. And, the beach for more than 20 miles was covered with debris...the memories and comforts of hundreds of families scattered across the sand and into the sound!
It was quite peaceful this morning. Ocassionally I could hear the sounds of boats leaving the harbor for some early morning fishing. And, the terns and gulls were dipping and diving and squaking at one another. There was one lone jogger, a teenager, who wished me happy Independence Day! I was touched by that because most people just refer to this day as the 'Fourth of July' which doesn't really convey the true significance of this observance. The framers of the Declaration were certainly courageous and many suffered for the stand they took.
I am praying for a quiet day to enjoy my family and friends. I pray that you will have a safe day!
Blessings!
